University of British Columbia Scholarship

Through the Vancouver Public Scholars Awards, Canadian scholars enrolled at the University of British Columbia (UBC) will have a special opportunity in the upcoming academic year of 2024–2025. These esteemed awards are intended to identify and encourage outstanding postgraduate students who exhibit a strong dedication to meaningful research and public service.

These scholarships, which come with two grants of up to $20,000 each, and individual allocations of up to $10,000 each, are extremely important in helping to finance creative and cooperative academic endeavors that might not otherwise be pursued. Financial assistance provided by UBC through the Vancouver Public Scholars Awards for the academic year 2024/2025 is customized to meet the individual needs of each recipient and includes a range of support types, such as research grants, professional development assistance, travel expenses for academic pursuits, and stipends for students who are unable to complete their current projects due to financial constraints with other funding sources.

About thirty bright students from various UBC faculties—including UBCO—qualify for this funding opportunity each year. Participants in the cohort may be eligible for renewal funding in the following year.

Scholarship Benefit

Financial aid up to $10,000 is available through the PSI Fellowship, and each recipient will receive a total of $20,000 over the course of two installments. Its main goal is to support creative and cooperative academic endeavors that students may find difficult to pursue because of budgetary constraints. This financial assistance offers flexibility in its application and consists of two primary parts:

  • Research Grant: This component of the fellowship provides funding for training in the field or for travel that is directly related to academic endeavors. It covers costs related to conducting research, going to conferences, and taking part in any other projects that advance the project as suggested.
  • Student Support Fund: The PSI Fellowship may provide financing for a student stipend if the student’s present funding does not permit participation in alternative initiatives. This guarantees that students will have the necessary financial support to focus on the alternative project(s) they have proposed without facing financial difficulties.

Eligiblity Criteria

The following criteria must be met in order to be eligible for financial aid:

  • Doctoral candidates at UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver who are enrolled in their first to fifth years of study, as well as those pursuing PhD, EdD, DMA, and part-time PhD studies, are eligible.
  • Candidates must be formally registered in a UBC PhD program by September 1, 2023, and they must have finished their doctoral degree within a maximum of 48 months by August 31, 2023, in order to be eligible. In extraordinary cases, exceptions for eligibility beyond this period—up to a maximum of 60 months of PhD study—may be taken into consideration.
  • At the end of their first (and, if applicable, second) year of financing, all grantees are expected to submit a report and showcase their work at a Network event called “PhDs Go Public.” At the end of their financing or involvement, students and their academic mentors are required to fill out an extensive questionnaire.
